Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo |

The one videogame that will always remain in my top ten videogames of all-time no matter what is Tetris. It single handedly showed the gaming public exactly the kind of weight that a puzzle game can carry. Everyone from your five year old cousin to your 70 year old grandma enjoys a little game of Tetris. Predictably, there were going to be many clones, and there have been. Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo takes the idea of falling blocks and takes it a bit further. Instead of having to match the same colors or having to make one complete line, players have to put all of the colors together that can only be smashed by a super gem. Only the corresponding super gem can destroy each color. So like in Tetris, the game basically turns into, "If I could only get that line" only it is damn fun in the process.GraphicsClearly, the graphics aren't the point of the game. Falling blocks can only look so good. The real stars of the game are the super-deformed fighters in the middle of the screen. They look so damn cute just standing there but then when they actually attack it makes me question the crappy 2D quailties of the PSX. No slowdown even with the flashiest of supermoves. What else can I say...this is a puzzle game...erm...the colors are vibrant.GameplayThis is where it's at. I have never enjoyed a puzzle game more then I have this one. It just feels good. It reminds me of Dr. Mario but a little more exciting. This game is likely the only time you'll hear me say, "Dammit! you countered my hadoken with the shoryu-reppa-ken!" Yes, you can actually counter in this game and it is actually more intuitive than in most fighting games. In fact, the highly competitive nature of this game requires that you counter. Enough blabbering though. To win consistently you must either must be a super-genius with nerves of steel or exteremely lucky. The only downfall of this game. It can be damn near impossible to beat some challenges in this game. But when you get tired of facing the computer be prepared for some of the most engaging, and raucous multiplayer action you have seen since Bomberman. My friend turned down a game of Dead Or Alive 2 for some puzzle fighting goodness. This game is fun, fun-fun-fun-fun-fun.SoundSome of the best sound I have heard in any game . All of the classic music is in here, albeit remixed. I love Ryu's music, it's too cool. Really though, the music is good. The sound effects are even better. Chun Li's "Komede!" and Morrigan's laugh really put you into the game's silly mood. "Hadoken!" has never sounded better.ControlUm...rotate the pieces with left or right and move it down by pressing down...While you may not go ape over this game it is one that should definitely be looked into. I picked it up for $17.99. A real steal. This game is fun refined to an art form. Back to Main Page |
